Medieval Walls York UK

June 10, 2009

One of York England’s major attractions is it well preserved medieval walls.

The walls surround the city nearly in it’s entirety. They are some of the best preserved England has to offer. There are 4 gates, or entrances, each one with its own history and features. A tour around the walls will take you to each one in turn and take you past York Minster as well.

The 4 gates of York are quite magnificent to see. On a walk of the walls you can start near York railways station. Near here your starting point would be the main gate to the city Micklegate Bar.

If you continue to the south, you will go round a strech of walls that is at its most beautiful in spring. Make sure you take a camera with you as you can get some great Pictures of York walls are covered in daffodils.

The next gate you will come to is Walmgate Bar. This is the only one that still has its barbican left on it.

Continuing around will bring you to Monk Baron Monkgate. Monkgate itself is a great place to take a break if you are a little tired. Lots of and York restaurants around here will be glad of your custom.

Moving along on the walls, you will pass by a great view of the North Transept of York Minster. When the trees are not in full leaf, this is a spectacular view and picture opertunity.

Last of the 4 bars is Bootham Bar in York. This is also very close to the Minster so you can end your tour here and visit said.

York restaurants have a great deal to offer

September 16, 2008

While here you cannot help but notice there are a great deal of York restaurants. This is because we are a University city (we all know how lazy rich students don’t cook) and because we have the Food and Drink festival every year. The festival highlights some of the great chef talent that is on offer in York.

There are some great choices available. One of my personal favourites is J. Bakers. This is what they call a Bistro Modern. Basically an up to date restaurant without the candles in bottles on the tables. Yet it does have some of the most exquisite of European cuisine. I will be checking it out again soon as each time I have been has been an absolute delight.

The great number of great places to eat in York don’t stop there. You can find anything you want really, if you know where to look. The Old Siam is a must for those of you who like spicey Thai food. A family run affair the service is very friendly and the food a delight.

Come to York for the best meal you have had in ages. It is all there waiting for you.

What to do when visiting York

September 16, 2008

OK for a start there is the Minster. This is the largest and most appealing of all the attractions in York. Built over a long period of time no one architect or Archbishop can really claim to be its parent. Yet the Gothic nature of the building has to be admired. Gargoyles that glare down and spikes that reach skyward make for a magnificent sight.

When you travel to York this really is one of the must see attractions in the city. In fact, it is so large that is is very hard not to see it. It dominates the skyline from several directions inside the walls.

Restoration is underway at the moment and has been for most of my own lifetime. Most of the building is visible but there is some scaffolding that has “stolen” some of the view of the minster from us. This is a necessity. However there is still much to see and enjoy both inside and out.
